The Wicker Chair by Robert Fowler

Beth's mother is dying, but the fourteen-year-old clings onto hope, believing God will come to her rescue. This causes conflict with both her father and older brother, who have accepted the inevitable. Beth prays and waits for a sign, which arrives one day in the form of a young carpenter. Beth is convinced this man will cure her mother.
