Daniel Core, a gunner’s mate from Charleston, SC, serves on a Two stack Destroyer in the Coral Sea just a week after the devastation of Pearl Harbor when they are attacked, and every officer is killed. He was battlefield promoted to acting Captain as a Warrant Officer by the last officer before dying of his wounds. Now he must fight the fire, the enemy, the elements, and the sea. He’s able to rise to the occasion and get the ship and crew to safety. Then he’s flown back to Pearl Harbor for the inquest and convalescence. He meets Kim-Yee 36 (1905), the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen in his life, and they start a whirlwind romance over the course of two weeks. Meanwhile, Admiral Nimitz likes him and decides he’s worthy of being mustanged through OCS. But since it was wartime, they shortened the training and lengthened the days.
